“Here she is — Miss America!”
While that somewhat sappy song may dredge up images of scantily-clad women traipsing across a stage, the Miss America pageant actually focuses on talent and intelligence as well as beauty. As a result, today’s contestants are not only among the most beautiful women in the nation, but also the most intelligent, poised, and socially aware.
Case in point is the current Miss Massachusetts, Lauren Kuhn.
A native of Washington State (where she graduated from Gonzaga University after serving as her high school Valedictorian), Kuhn came to Boston to attend the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and to conduct research at Beth Israel Hospital.  Read More HERE

But the 2014 Miss Massachusetts, who placed in the top 5 in the Miss America pageant, still has places she wants to go — namely Iceland. A graduate of Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., (her native state) and now a student at Harvard’s School of Dental Medicine, as well as an accomplished pianist, Kuhn advocates for empowering women through education. We caught up with her to talk about all things travel.  -> Read more

Lauren Kuhn speaking at the  Boston Rotary Club

On April 22, 2015, Lauren Kuhn was thrilled to be the guest speaker at the Boston Rotary Club! They're Rotary #7 which makes them the seventh rotary to be established internationally! She spoke about her platform, the scholarship she started last year, and the way that ‪#‎missamerica‬ complements academia. ‪#‎rotary‬ ‪#‎boston‬

Tonight I had the pleasure of visiting Bridgewater State University to speak with 11-13 year old girls (48 in total) who had been sponsored by their schools to attend a week of a STEM-focused program called Envision the Future. Antonia, pictured with me here, wants to become an orthodontist! I had so many girls ask for my advice on education and quite a few told me I was an inspiration and hugged me. It was so moving!  I also networked with many of the women in attendance who asked me to speak at career days and future STEM events. It was wonderful. I met girls who had aspirations similar to many of my pageant sisters, so I told them about my sister queens' successes! The Attleboro girls were thrilled when I told them the new Miss Mass was from their hometown!

The United States has become a global leader, in large part, through the genius and hard work of its scientists, engineers and innovators. Yet today, that position is threatened as comparatively few American students pursue expertise in the fields of science, technology,

engineering and mathematics (STEM)—and by an inadequate pipeline of teachers skilled in those subjects. President Obama has set a priority of increasing the number of students and teachers who are proficient in these vital fields.

Lauren Kuhn is doing a remarkable job within the STEM program, promoting education in these fields.  Her tireless work earned her a $5,000 scholarship in the recent Miss America pageant and one of only 4 people that received such an award!  If you have any questions regarding her work or about what the STEM program is about, please visit the CONTACT page and make sure you put STEM in the subject line.
